Compost for Christmas - 17 Nov 2011
Do you want to give a unique and useful gift this Christmas? A compost bin is a great green gift that allows you to do your bit for the environment.

Chairperson of Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority, Councillor Joe DeAsha, said: “A home compost bin is an original gift idea and makes a great present for a keen gardener or anyone who has an interest in green issues or the environment. It’s definitely an improvement on socks or handkerchiefs!”

Research has shown that a staggering third of what goes in the average Merseyside bin could be composted, instead of ending up in landfill.

Councillor DeAsha adds, “You can use a compost bin almost immediately by composting all the vegetable peelings from your Christmas dinner. This will enable you to start your new compost heap and next year you’ll have lovely free compost for your garden as a result.”

Not only does it make a unique Christmas gift, but it’s a positive way to start the new year by helping to significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and combat climate change, whilst reaping the benefits for your garden.

Home composting – top tips for Christmas

Home composting is easy to do all year round; here are some great tips to ensure we keep a good thing going by not overlooking our compost bin or heap during these cooler, darker months:

- Help next year’s plants grow by making use of this year’s tired vegetation. Adding spent bedding plants to your compost mix will help to capture all the nutrients and will give your new plants a great start when the garden wakes up in the spring.

- Bring the inside, outside! A third of our household waste can be composted at home. Anything from loo roll tubes and egg boxes to coffee grounds and tea bags are all welcome additions to your compost bin.

- Make your compost mixture more a-peel-ing. Don’t forget to regularly add your kitchen waste to your compost. It will really appreciate the peelings from your tasty winter vegetables and festive fruits such as Satsumas and Clementines.

- Give your mix a Christmas present! Many of us will have extra waste over the festive period. Your compost mix will benefit from adding a few of the telltale signs of Christmas; a small amount of fallen tree needles, tangerine peel and egg shells will all be welcome winter additions.

- Reduce your carbon footprint. Sending food waste to landfill is 23 times more damaging to the environment that driving your car (kilogram for kilogram).
