Green Star Recycling - 14 October 2009
During the 2008/09 academic year, Crosby High School topped the Green Star Recycling League, Netherton Moss topped the Silver league and St Oswalds Primary topped the Bronze League. Now the gauntlet has been thrown down to all schools across the borough to try and beat them.Last year schools had to recycle a certain amount of paper per pupil to get into a particular league with three leagues set up: Green, Silver and Bronze.
Targets were set for each league and schools were also awarded Green Stars for promoting activities such as participation in the Eco-Schools Programme, recycling of other materials such as cans and ink cartridges and for initiatives aimed at promoting the 4 R'S (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Responsibility). Stars were used to put rank schools in certain their leagues.
Overall, schools in Sefton recycled approximately 160 tonnes of paper during the 2008/09 academic year, saving around 2,720 trees from being cut down. Sefton Council's contractor AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe collect all the paper.
For 2009/10, a fourth league is being introduced for schools who recycle paper and gain green stars for other activities but do not make it into the other leagues.
Cabinet Member Environmental, Cllr David Tattersall, said: "Well done to all the schools who take part in this exciting project.
"Learning about recycling and reusing materials at an early age only bodes well for the future and hopefully children can take the recycling message home
with them.
"Crosby High School topped the Green table last year, so lets see who can make a big impact and recycle even more paper this year round."
