New Recycling Centre proposals - 22 Feb 2010
Proposals to create a new £1.9 Million Household Waste Recycling Centre in Huyton, Knowsley, will be unveiled to the public next month. The new Household Waste Recycling Centre would be built on the site of a former HGV depot on Wilson Road, within the Huyton Industrial Estate – replacing an existing Centre just 230 metres away in Ellis Ashton Street.
It would handle up to 20,000 tonnes of recyclables each year and provide better traffic management with more space for queuing cars, a greater range of recycling containers and a canopy to shield visitors from bad weather.
Plans for the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) scheme will be unveiled at public open days in March and through a mailing to more than 16,000 local residents and businesses.
MWDA Director Carl Beer said: “This is about creating a modern and vastly improved local recycling facility for Knowsley residents which would complement the replacement facility we are creating further north at Knowsley Industrial Park, Kirkby.
“Our priority is to make sure local people have as much information as we can give them before we go ahead and formally submit our plans to Knowsley Council.”
Public information days will take place at the Huyton Suite in Civic Way on Monday 8th March (11.30am-7pm) and Tuesday 9th March (11.30am – 5.30pm).
MWDA Chairperson Kevin Cluskey said: “This will be a much more efficient and effective facility and, we believe, will play a significant part in encouraging more recycling on Merseyside.”
The MWDA Planning Application is due to be submitted to Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council in April. The new Centre, which would not affect operations at the Waste Transfer Station in Ellis Ashton Street, would be operational by autumn next year if planners give the go ahead.

Note to Editors
1. Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) is responsible for the disposal of municipal waste on Merseyside. Established in 1986 following the abolition of Merseyside County Council, it is a statutory Authority that works with all the local authorities on Merseyside – Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral. MWDA takes a lead in advocating recycling, waste minimisation and safe and effective disposal of waste for Merseyside’s residents.
2. The new Centre would enable the public to recycle and dispose of a wide range of materials free of charge including; car batteries, cardboard, electrical items and equipment, engine oil, garden waste, household batteries, paper, furniture, rubble, scrap metal, textiles, drinks cans, timber, glass and soil.
